It was with tremendous sadness that I read a Facebook post by her family announcing that Jennifer Jaff, Founder and Executive Director of Advocacy for Patients, a nonprofit dedicated towards helping individuals file insurance appeals, passed away on Friday. It was also appropriate that the world would learn of her passing tonight, as she was a person who truly cared about everyone.

The employees of large health insurance companies are worried about facing real competition that is accountable to the public, and not quarterly profit reports. They're worried that a real public option that is accountable to the people, and not Wall Street will end the party where they get bonuses and glowing performance evaluations for denying the sick the care they need. Today, the leadership of the House of Representatives took a strong stand for the American people and a strong stand against big insurance companies.

Today, Joe Lieberman decided to be a road block on the American people's way to the doctor. Lieberman said he would join Republicans in obstructing cancer patients treatment. This is surprising, because just two weeks ago, Lieberman was insisting that he would not be a road block on Americans' way to the doctor's office.

In headlines you never thought you'd see here, this is one of them. But today Senator Harry Reid delivered for the American people. He sent a bill to the CBO for scoring which includes a public option, and doesn't include health insurance industry-favored triggers, which would basically enable the insurance industry to continue to increase premiums and squeeze the American middle class.

Senator Harry Reid isn't exactly the most popular person around here. As Majority Leader, he's been a disappointment to progressives. We worked hard for a 60 vote Majority in the Senate last year, and we earned it. We were disappointed when we had to fight just as hard to get progressive health care reform to be taken seriously.

Yesterday, the President of the United States took two concrete steps that will jump start American small businesses--the engine of the American economy--and reign in Wall Street big shots who think that the taxpayers subsidizing their own greed is a good thing.

Today is a day that we should all be calling into Congress in support of a public option. The public option is at a critical juncture. Senator Harry Reid has shown an inclination to support the public option. Unfortunately, Senator Max Baucus and others are trying to convince Harry Reid that the public option cannot pass, and therefore should not be included in the merged Senate bill. We can make a difference by calling our Senators and Representatives in support of a public option today.

Paul Krugman had an interesting column in the New York Times today. Krugman argues that Wall Street, like the insurance industry, is a victim of its own hubris. He believes that the administration will quickly boost job creation programs, and shift its focus away from the financial sector. In Krugman's opinion, this will lead to a lasting economic recovery.
